During March and April 2019, I worked within a group project that involved combining and improving on the systems we created prior in the Gameplay Programming course. This would eventually lead to the creation of a small game that used all of these systems in levels that showcased their potential.
This video showcases the first scene of the project. While the systems in place, such as the avatar and powerups, were not created by myself, I created the scene with the goal of showcasing these systems effectively.
The player starts in a closed off area facing north, where they are shortly directed east to encourage the player to experiment with the camera controls and get used to the system.
The platforming segment afterwards progressively gets more difficult as the player progresses, though the earlier platforms are larger in diameter and smaller in height to allow the player to get used to how jumping works.
Additionally, as shown at 0:19, the speed boost powerup is introduced. It dramatically increases the player speed, but the environment built around is relatively safe and punishes the player little for messing up the jump, giving them a chance to try it again.
